All of us who lead the Project in Britain are volunteers, and we are grateful to those who every summer demonstrate how gifted and experienced volunteers can also serve God by going to Romania. This has been a valuable lesson to Romanians who have traditionally left such work to those who hold official qualifications. Those who go in the summer join a missionary movement of part-time volunteers that God has blessed over 18 years.
Every year we recruit individual Christians and form them into teams. Volunteers can apply to join a team which will run a children's holiday club or camp lasting one week in partnership with a local Christian Church. Our workers, friends and partners in Romania take responsibility for organising follow up after our visits to invite the children to join regular Christian clubs or local churches. Volunteers can choose to continue working in Romania for up to 3 weeks at no extra cost. Some volunteers choose to extend their stay in Romania after the work is done so as to travel independently in the country.
Volunteers must have a personal Christian faith, some experience of work with children, and they must be ready to join with 4 or 5 others from elsewhere in Britain to lead, say, a holiday club over 5 days. A training weekend is held each June before volunteers leave where volunteers are familiarised with the essentials of working in Romania, and get a chance to work together on the actual spiritual and fun programmes that will be used in the Summer.
In 2010 we are invited to run a number of holiday clubs and camps in various locations in the West and East of Romania. These will support of Christian workers engaged in both evangelistic, discipleship and compassionate ministries. In the West we will be working with our in-country team in the Petrosani area, working with pstors in Dobra and Zalau. In the East we will be working alongside Christians working with street children, as well as gypsy communities and the poor. Our aim in doing this is to grow indigenous children’s work in Romania so that even more will hear about our Lord Jesus and have the opportunity to become part of the Church Family.
